When we start falling out of love with a job, our first hope is usually that we’ll fall back in love with it very soon. However, if that doesn’t happen and months pass, we start looking to make a change, but making this change suddenly is not as easy as we thought.

Here are some of the reasons we tend to get stuck in a job we don’t love anymore. Do any of them sound familiar to you?

You don’t want to leave your current employer hanging

It is an extremely busy time and the thought of leaving your employer makes your stomach turn. The guilt takes over.

Such loyalty is admirable however staying just because of it, won’t help anyone. Your employer wouldn’t want you to stay knowing you are unhappy.

Your fear of regret is paralysing you

You think about it over and over again. You play out different potential scenarios in your head panicking about the what ifs. Your fear of regretting the decision to move, makes you not want to move at all.

If you can persuade yourself to stay because of this then maybe you’re not ready to leave after all. If you really wanted to make the change this fear will not have such persuading power. Maybe all you need is a holiday or some time away from the office.

You hate being the new kid on the block

The thought of starting all over again scares you. Making new friends, breaking into a new system and a new workplace where you must prove yourself all over again stresses you out. These thoughts weigh you down and make you not want to do anything at all.

The best way to tackle this is to remind yourself that this period doesn’t last long, before you know it you’ll feel like you belong. Pushing yourself to get through this period successfully is a great achievement and will make you feel very good about yourself.

You don’t trust life and the uncertainty of it

What if, what if, what if? Yes, life is uncertain and there isn’t much we can do about it. Sometimes the best thing we can do is less thinking and more acting, to just close our eyes and take the leap. It is when doing things that scare us that we really grow as individuals. Your comfort zone may be a warm and fuzzy place but remaining within it won’t take you anywhere.

Therefore, push your boundaries and say yes to new adventures!

Not sure what to do next

You know you want to make a change in life but you're not sure what to do. We went into detail on this here Finding a job that makes you happy. Have a read through it and see what you think.

The answer lies in you, you just need to find it.

Not supported in your decision to leave – you might let someone you love down by leaving

When the people you love don’t support your decision to leave, it can be a big problem. Besides persuading yourself, you need to persuade someone else which is extra and unnecessary.

We suggest having a good long chat with your loved ones to find a way passed this. The fear of judgement from others creates added pressure and anxiety that you don’t need.

We will conclude with this...

One of the greatest discoveries a man makes is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do” – Henry Ford.

Don’t hold back from making that change in your life. Yes, you will feel afraid but in the end it will be worth it!
